Be still my beating heart

Everybody has their kinks. What floats your boat may sink somebody else’s battleship. Me? I loooooove drawers. Not fancy, French knickers. I mean as in “chest of”. Though I get rhapsodic over a nice shelving system too. Storage baskets. Ooooooo – divider trays. The Container Store is my porn shop.

My ultimate fantasy is to have one of those super-tricked out closets. You know with all sorts of little cubbies and clothing rods of varying heights. With color coded sweaters and t-shirts, and shoes lined up like neat little soldiers. A place for everything and everything in its place.

And, frankly, I’m to the point where I’m just going to go balls to the wall on my fantasy. I’m dead serious. I’ve decide that the only difference between me and organized people is a good shelving unit. If I have to figure out where something goes, the answer is always going to be draped over the closest available stationary object. I end up with a pile of shoes in front of the TV. Kitchen towels in with my pajamas. Toilet bowl cleaner in the front entry.

Like any good fantasy, the whole organization thing has always seemed a little indulgent and naughty to me. Like the kind of decadence that only an anal-retentive plutocrat would indulge in. Well, I’ve been flying by the seat of my pants on holding back the tide of chaos too long. And my toukas is now threadbare. No more. I want order. And order I shall have!

Oooo, my heart was beating faster reading this. We must like the same kind of porn shop.

There is no guaranty that organizers will keep you neat and organized, despite the name, but they do help. Then you will want more and more of them. And more.

My first purchase was tonight! I found 4 Liberty print closet boxes at Target - fuschia with black and white flower pattern and lime green trim. MMMMMMM lovely.

My goal for the summer is to get one of those tricked-out closets! We've been saving some dough for just such a thing. Sadly, I haven't had time to research what I want (work hell) but I WILL.

I'm a sucker for fancy refrigerators. Nothing makes me happier than seeing a sexy fridge full of drawers and lots of cool shelves. I really love those big monsters at specialty stores with cut-outs for wine or milk or cheese. I drool over them.

I went on one of those home tour shows last summer in Austin (on Lake Travis - fancy!) and one house had this walk-in closet that was the size of a bedroom. Lots of drawers, upper/lower hanging rods, an island in the middle with mulitple drawers for stuff, and a PULL-DOWN drawer from the ceiling to store even more stuff! It was heaven!

I'm awfully lustful of those SubZero fridge's that are in pieces that can be put around the kitchen - vegetables near the sink, meat near the stove. Unfortunately, if I did that (or had the money to afford it), I'd have no room left for things like food, pots and pans, a sink . . . tiny kitchen.

Be sure to check Ikea. They've got some nifty closet stuff. Not quite as expensive as Elfa (oooo, Elfa), and still some jazzy to it.
